I must admit that when I was sent this book to review, I felt that as these subjects are really not my cup of tea, that I would not enjoy it. Well, what a surprise I got having finished it. This book truly is "THE" book on Secret Societies. I never realized for a moment, that so many different and varied societies have been operating in the world, each of who have their own set of values and agenda. Author David V. Barratt, informs the reader about societies such as the Ku Klux Klan, on which on a personal basis, I have no time for and detest their unruly methods and methodology. The Chinese Triads are also looked into and their history and reason for being, is given in extremely explanatory tones!

This book is not a muddle of different societies, the author has painstakingly put in order, the roots of these societies, which is followed by the witch hunts, Freemasonry, Esoteric societies (which includes the Rosicrucians, Aleister Crowley, Esoteric Tarot, and the Order of The Golden Dawn). Each chapter gives the reader an in-depth look at many of the world's secret societies, which amazing and startling revelations, many of which will either upset you, or make your blood boil (it did with me!). The author asks, "Why do people want to join such secret societies, what do they hope to get out of them?" He responds by saying that it is for a whole range of different reasons. Some of which have to do with becoming more successful in their life, a chance to increase their memory, whilst some feel a genuine need to get closer to God!

Where I found this book most ;illuminating , is when the author goes into the history and beliefs of these societies, the Spanish Inquisition is looked at, the Cathars and the Quest for the Holy Grail, and the fact that many occult societies had connections with the Nazis. Having read this book, I feel that the author has done a tremendous job in bringing together the vast and complex world wide side secret societies which operate throughout the mankind. This is a very impressive book, which I cannot recommend highly enough. It proved a great surprise to me having read it, and I suggest that if you would like you eyes opened into the subjects mentioned above (and many, many more), then you can't do any better than picking up a copy of this book.
